Continuing the legacy: Med student awarded scholarship

First-year medical student Kathryn L. Shaia is the recipient of the 2011 MCV Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship. She has a master’s in health care administration from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and wants to work in public health like her grandfather, William Harry Shaia (M.D.’45/M).

Throughout her academic career, she has engaged in community service, including serving, while an undergraduate, as co-vice president of Start-for-the-Heart, a nonprofit organization that raised funds for indigent children in need of cardiac services, and as public health coordinator for a student-run free clinic at UNC.

Shaia’s family owned and operated the popular Skull and Bones restaurant on the MCV Campus for many years. They have also supported schools on the MCV Campus through the establishment of the Harry and Zackia Shaia Annual Scholarship, the Thomas and Mary Shaia Family Scholarship and the Fred and Rose Shaia Scholarship.
